DRUM & BASS
What is Drum n Bass?

I'm not really into drum n' bass (jungle), but from what I understand it began as a combination of reggae and techno. The drum machine is put at the forefront of the compositon. It incorporates a sped-up hip hop breakbeat and a half-time bassline. Submitted by: mikly

Big names in Drum n Bass are: Hype, Randall, Brockie, Mickey Finn, Andy C, S S, Nicky Blackmarket and Rap. MCs: Magika, Stixmann, Charlie B, MC MC, Freestyle, Fatz and Robbie Dee. Submitted by: Richard Panczak

In 1991 Hardcore Rave went into the mainstream charts due to the Prodigy's first chart hit Charly, this started off a number of chart smashes such as trip to trumpton etc. A lot of the DJs and producers didn't agree with hardcore being a commercial success say that the tunes were being watered down and just produced to make money,(fair play) so they started making tracks which were darker and this style was called jungle techno. Djs such as Ratty and Tango, Fabio and Grooverider to name a few. As time went on this dark hardcore started to break away from hardcore and by 1993 it was its own style all together. The name jungle ( now correct me if I wrong ) was coined at the Astoria when a M.C (i forget the name) Said 'its like a jungle , its called Jungle' something along those lines, and the rest is History. GABBA
What is Gabba?

Thats funny. I've got a HMS tape and he uses exactly the same vinyl tracks as Producer and Scorpio except the speed/pitch difference. Explain that. Its either Gabber or it isn't. Submitted by: DJ Carl B

Ah... the golden question. How many nights have been soured over this one... Okay. In my opinion, gabba is a very hard, (but not necessarily fast) form of dance music. Dutch/Belgian in origin, it combines the repetitive acid vibe with techno-style patterns and stabs, and generally a hard, dark 4-beat. In the UK, there are only 2 top-level DJ's who play proper gabba - HMS and Loftgroover. DJ's like Producer, Clarkee, Scorpio, etc DO NOT play gabba (not on a regular basis anyway), listen carefully! and you will hear the difference. Submitted by: Anonymous

GABBA MUSIC IS EXTREME FAST BEATS, BREAKS AND NOIZE, FOR THE HEADSTRONG MENTAL CASES, WHO, LIKE MYSELF CAN COMPLETELY LOSE IT AND GO MENTAL WHEN DANCING TO IT. Submitted by: Lucy

GABBA IS VERY MAD AND BANGING MUSIC JUST A BIT LIKE HAPPY HARDCORE IN A WAY THE BASS DRUM IS ETC BUT WITH GABBA YOU GET SCARY MUSIC LIKE FROM A HORROR FILM ETC SAMPLED UP AND INTO A GABBA RECORD HAPPY HARDCORE AND GABBA ARE FORMS OF TECHNO MUSIC I KNOW IT IS NOT LIKE JEFF MILLS TYPE TECHNO BUT THE FORM OF HOW THE MUSIC IS MADE I LIKE JEFF MILLS TYPE OF TECHNO ANY WAY I HAVE QUITE A FEW MINIMAL TO EXTREME TECHNO RECORDS GABBA IS EXPERIMENTAL SOME LABELS LABELS AREA 51 RECORDS DJ CLARKEE AND CREW (UK) LENNEY DEE RECORDS BASTARD LOUD SHOCKWAVE RECORDS ROTTERDAM RECORDS BRAINDEAD RECORDS THUNDERDOME RECORDS ID&T SCREW DRIVER RECORDS TWISTED VINYL RECORDS ETC ETC ETC I KNOW LOTS MORE EMAIL ME gabba is music to mix when you dont want to use your happy tunes Submitted by: CLIFF TATE

Good opinion,I agree with you totally. I don't think of lofty being as totaly GABBA orientated as HMS though. Submitted by: MIKE.

Gabba or Gabber is dutch from origin it was formed by the supporters from Feyenoord a soccer team from rotterdam, wich after a while spread all over the country and europe, it is still the number one hardcore sound in holland and still bigger than that trance shit. and the best dj's/producers are : 3 steps ahead, the prophet(masochist, buzz fuzz, dj promo, rotterdam terror corps. Submitted by: Sonny Hoogendoorn

you said that only two top level DJs play gabba, you obviously havent heard of the top level DJ SMURF THEN Submitted by: TONY LIDDANE

What is Gabba.???

A head mash up!!! No, its hard, maybe not 220bpm speed, but fast enuf, and usually Belgian or dutch influence. PPl like HMS and Loftgroover are the only 2 DJ's I can think of who play this sort of music regularly. Scorpio, Producer and Dolphin play hard techno, hardcore techno, not GABBA. Submitted by: St1X

surley HMS and Loftgroover play speedcore, the most gabba like dj is scorpio's selection with the old german/netherland shit played back to back with the new prog-techno sound. what do i know-its open to interpretation Submitted by: tusk

Robb Gee is thee top gabber DJ around and I think your website sux!!!!You have happy hardcore listed as hardcore and it's not hardcore it's HAPPY. Submitted by: Anonymous

Gabba (or Gabber) is related to happy hardcore though is usually darker, with no female vocals or piano. There are two main styles of gabba these are- slow dutch gabba which tends to be about 140 BPM (Beats per minute) and "Speedcore" which is about 280 BPM. Speedcore tends to have more heavy metal influences but not always. Most people thinkthat Loftgroover plays gabba but actually he plays speedcore. Gabba djs include Shoey (big up all girl DJs! and Jay prescott, etc.) Both styles can be mixed as the BPM'S are doubled. Gabba is related to a more intelligent form of kickdrum madness known as "Hard Techno".(DJS who play this style include producer, scorpio, clarkee. etc) Submitted by: The Gherkin

Gabber is proper hardcore techno without all the cheese. The best country for gabber is Spain and Pont Aeri in Barcelona is the shrine to all who worship it. + Tommyknocker mixes it up the best. Submitted by: Tabes
I have Scopio and Clarkee tapes, I thought they were Gabba, its sounds like it, its definatly not Happycore, so what is it then?
its hardcore techno Submitted by: The Gherkin

What is Hakke or Hacke?

Hakke, is the dance style used by the dutch, when dancing to Gabba, I think..... Submitted by: Freebass
